Thomas Sowell's "A Conflict of Visions" makes very much the same kind of argument. It's worth a read if you haven't looked at it.

Sister St. Francis would know that there are many ways of laying aside the garments of the world, and not all are so literal. In the history of women religious, habits did not begin as a distinction but as a blending-in. Just as wearing the habit can bring humility to sisters who do so, I also find it quite a sign of humility when sisters let their good deeds speak quietly for them without making their presence so visibly known. "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them."

Hi Simon, a very nice and thoughtful essay. It is quite impressive work actually.

Regarding the apparent contradictions in Canons 58 and 101 of the Constantinople coucils, I wouldn't be surprised if over time "ab se" (by himself) became "ad se" (to himself). Thus the orginal could have said "None of those who are in the order of laymen may distribute the Divine Mysteries BY himself if a bishop, presbyter, or deacon be present." This has the benefit of being A) Entirely consistent with Church teaching, and B) gets rid of the awkward "distribute to himself" wording which just sounds odd, even for an early Church council.

I will add if the Latin text (which I don't have access to) DOES presently read "ad se" then my guess at a corruption of the text is likely as "per se" would have been a better way to say "to himself".

Thanks for posting this. I pray your Easter will be truly joyous.
